Classical -- With a Twist.
Rating: 5
If you love classical music, but can enjoy a good parody, this is a concert for you. Having a good background in music theory comes in handy to truly appreciate the way Schickle has shifted keys, combined themes, etc. Having performed "The Seasonings", I understand just how difficult these pieces truly are. It's great fun.

Wonderful!!!! So good to see what's happening rather than just hearing it,

Hilarious.

I saw the noble Professor in concert nearly 3 decades ago, and I'm glad to have finally found a DVD that has some of his on-stage humor. Maybe more perfomances (like perhaps the Stoned Guest...?) will show up on DVD

Recordings are funnier.
Rating: 3
The P.D.Q. Bach franchise has had some hilarious recordings. Because of this it would seem it would be even funnier to see them performed. The choir is in robes, but of terry cloth not polyester. It's fun to see the wacky instruments and shenanigans happening in 'concert' with the music.
But, Schickele has been presenting these concerts for over 40 years - and it shows. The pacing is slow and the humor lacks energy. He attempts to take a rope down to the concert stage but ends up falling in a pile. This would be funny if he were a fit, young Tim Conway. But he's not - instead I was concerned he might have broken a hip. Other gags are momentarily funny but not for the entire time they take to run their course.
It's a nice trip down memory lane but probably more worth a rental.

Houston, we DO have a problem.
Rating: 4
This concert video is a clear demonstration of the pitfalls of too-familiar material. While Peter Schickele's PDQ Bach material is as hysterical, intelligent, and quirky as ever, when the audience knows every joke before it happens, they just don't react with anything like the hysteria the music deserve. The result is a wan reception that seems to leave the orchestra, the soloists, and Professor Schickele confused, resentful, or just plain tired. The stuff is just as funny as it ever was -- but when the audience merely murmurs its appreciation and claps politely, it's hard to feel enthusiastic.
If you've never heard PDQ Bach before, bypass this one and get one of the earlier recordings in which the audience screams, stomps, and falls out of their seats. If you're familiar with him and want to see a full performance, get the "Abduction of Figaro" tape or DVD. I guarantee you a better time.

Mr. Moore is one very soulful blues/rock guitarist.
Rating: 5
Gary's performance is not perfect for this show but it is very good. There is a song or two here where he seems a bit tired and doesn't quite move me like his studio recordings do. But remember the main show here includes 16 songs. On most of the show he plays like a man inspired. Standouts to me are "The Messiah Will Come Again", "Parisienne Walkways" (from the bonus set) and "The Stumble". Albert Collins plays on at least 3 songs here and is an entertaining part of the performance. He and Gary provide some interesting interplay on thier instruments, particularly on "Further On Up The Road" where they appear to be argueing with each other using thier guitars at one point. In case you didn't notice in the track listing, this is a generous package with 19 tracks included. I'm very happy to have this one in my collection.

A great DVD! Well worth owning.
Rating: 5
This has been a favorite DVD of mine for the past several weeks. It captures some of my favorite songs that Gary Moore has done during his "blue" phase. The video footage is great for guitarist and Gary's guitar face on some of the solos are alone worth the cost of the DVD!

Guitarist extraodinaire.
Rating: 5
Although this was recorded 17 years ago, forgetting that, this DVD shows the power and amazing abilities of the great guitarist Gary Moore. While I am more into his blues stuff, his rock is just as great. His talent is a given and while he obviously is not a young man, even then let alone now, this DVD is worth the price if you are into Gary Moore, the blues, rock or just guitars or if you are a musician.

Wow! Yes, he can play guitar live too!.
Rating: 4
Moore has been on the Rock Blues trail for sometime now. This is earlier in the trip. Nice to see him live, I never have. He can play. He takes alot of the available space here, but he has since developed a little more dynamics and lets the music breathe alot more now. Anyway, it is a fun time for fans to enjoy, it does not disappoint, thats for sure!

Great Pas De Deux.

This was a beautiful gathering of some of the greatest dancers of the last century. It was wonderful.

I expected more....

It is hard to explain why, but I was disappointed with this DVD. For some reason, every time I want to watch a ballet performance, I choose one of my other ballet DVDs (such as Kirov celebrated Nijinsky, or Kirov Classics).

DVD version of earlier released video.
Rating: 3
This is simply a DVD version of a video released some years ago (aprox. 5-8 years ago?) so the newer partnerships mentioned in some of the reviews above, and already released on other DVDs (and copyrighted by their producers) would not have been available for inclusion. However, what is included are several exemplary pas de deux danced by some of the best dancers of the last 30+ years. If you haven't seen them live, this is a good chance to view them at their best, and be able to compare to other (more current) interpretations and see how changing forms and style have impacted ballet.

Rivetingly great art. Nureyev and Baryshnikov especially. I wish I had had the opportunity to see any of these dancers in person.
